CORPORATE COMMUNICATION INTERN

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop strategic communication plans for a variety of company initiatives and on a variety of subjects including: Culture, Awards, Executive Platforms, health and benefits, facilities, safety, and campus communication.
  • Assist with measurement and reporting for Executive Platforms
  • Help create content for a number of our channels including: digital signs, LUVLines (internal print magazine), blogs on SWALife (Company intranet), multimedia project requests,
  • Monitor and respond to Speakers Bureau requests

 

EDUCATION:

  • Progress towards degree, major, or minor in a Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Emerging Media, Business or Communications related field required.
  • Minimum junior status or above.
  • To be eligible must be currently enrolled as a full time student (minimum 12 credit hours).
  • Maintained 3.0 or above cumulative GPA.

 

Experience:

Communications related work experience preferred (part-time jobs, internships, etc).
Writing experience preferred (school newsletter, business, or creative).
Leadership experience is a plus.
Participation in trade/industry organizations, community involvement, and/or school clubs preferred.
Event planning experience preferred.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge/Work Style:

Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Must possess a strong proficiency of the English language, including superior grammar, spelling, and organizational skills.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Applications, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
Must have a passion for social media.
Understanding of the airline/travel industry is a plus.
Ability to work independently and the willingness to function as part of a Team.
Ability to handle multiple projects under tight deadlines and work well under pressure.
Must have ability to comprehend, proofread, and edit a variety of documents with a keen eye for accuracy and attention to detail.
Must handle confidential and sensitive information with the utmost professionalism.
Must be able to present self well to meet public and have the ability to present in large or small settings. Public speaking skills and/or experience a plus.

COMMUNICATIONS OR PUBLIC RELATIONS INTERN

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Intern will support communications within one of the following Teams:  Corporate, Commercial, Editorial, Measurement & Analytics, or Operational.

Public Relations (Commercial)

  • Develop strategic communication plans for a variety of company initiatives and on a variety of subjects including: New city and new route launches, international, music and entertainment, marketing, network and schedule planning.
  • Prepare written communications, such as news releases, media alerts, blogs, and social media copy.
  • Assist with day-to-day event coordination, including news events, local market events, and escorting media.
  • Public Relations administrative duties, updating media contact lists in Vocus, and media follow up calls.

Corporate Communication

  • Develop strategic communication plans for a variety of company initiatives and on a variety of subjects including: Culture, Awards, Executive Platforms, health and benefits, facilities, safety, and campus communication.
  • Assist with measurement and reporting for Executive Platforms
  • Help create content for a number of our channels including: digital signs, LUVLines (internal print magazine), blogs on SWALife (Company intranet), multimedia project requests,
  • Monitor and respond to Speakers Bureau requests

Editorial

  • Writing and content creation/curation of articles and blog posts
  • Editing and proofreading Company material
  • Content management for our external blog
  • Production assistance with our internal, weekly news program

Measurement & Analytics

  • Assist with measurement reports and ROI analysis on various communications campaigns and business initiatives.
  • Interested in data mining to find trends in news media and social media coverage.
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics, Radian 6, Cision Media Monitoring, Facebook Insights, Omniture, and other monitoring/analytics tools and databases. 

Operational Communication

  • Write and edit departmental articles/memos, blog posts, newsletters, and internal magazine stories.
  • Manage and design content for Companywide digital monitors.
  • Serve as communication liaison to field locations and/or other departments and develop strategic communication plans.
  • Assist with special projects.

Depending on the position, duties can include but are not limited to:

  • Write articles for Employee magazine, LUVLines, departmental publications, and Southwest’s onboard magazine, Spirit.
  • Prepare blog postings, press releases, memos, and letters.
  • Assist with daily communications on the Southwest Airlines corporate social media channels, scheduling the calendar daily posts/tweets to all applicable social media outlets, coordinating the editorial calendar with online activity, tracking social media influence measurements, and social media reporting.
  • Assist with measurement reports and ROI analysis on various communications campaigns and business initiatives.
  • Work with the Multimedia Team to storyboard, develop, and create webisodes and external video content.
  • Design content for digital signs.
  • Assist with loading and scheduling content for Nuts About Southwest blog and Employee departmental websites.
  • Support communication for Southwest’s community, citizenship, and sustainability/green initiatives, including communication planning, content development, and project management
  • Edit and proofread Company material.
  • Serve as communication liaison to field locations and/or other departments.
  • Participate in event planning, speech preparations, and escorting news crews
  • Attend cross-functional meetings as needed.
  • Complete special projects as needed.
  • Assist with strategic communications planning.
  • Possible travel involved. 

Basic Qualifications:

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
