Creative Media Students Make their Mark at Hearst Multimedia Narrative Storytelling Competition

The University of Alabama’s College of Communication and Information Sciences (C&IS) continues to excel on the national stage, with two student projects named among the top 20 winners in the Hearst Multimedia Visual/Narrative Storytelling Competition. The recognition came from a competitive field of 97 entries representing 57 schools.

In addition to the individual honors, UA ranked eighth out of 10 institutions for the highest accumulated student points in the competition.

This year’s multimedia competition was judged by industry professional Lauren Frohne, lead video journalist at The Seattle Times; Jim Seida, producer at NBC News; and Ed Ou, visual journalist and documentary filmmaker.

Now in its 66th year, the Hearst Journalism Awards Program includes 14 total competitions across writing, photo, audio, television, podcast, and multimedia categories, offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, grants and stipends. Currently, 104 accredited journalism programs within the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication are eligible to participate.

Participants like Emily Rabbideau (“Where the River Flows” for The Center of Public Television) and Jada Ceasar (“Liberation” for The Center for Public Television) were able to film their projects in a mirage of places including Cahaba River and East Lake Park in Birmingham.
