To apply for C&IS scholarships, students should log in to their myBama account and choose the “Admissions/Scholarship” tab. The scholarship application located here serves as a single application for all of the scholarships available within C&IS. By submitting this application you will be considered for all college and department scholarships for which you are eligible.
Advertising and Public Relations
Dr. Arnold Barban Endowed Scholarship in Advertising
Amount: Minimum of $1,000 annually
Availability: One or more each year
Eligibility: Advertising students who show high potential and exceptional promise as advertising professionals
Bruce K. Berger Graduate Student Leadership Award
Amount: Approximately $100 annually
Availability: One or more each year
Eligibility: Earnings are used to make awards to graduate students in the department of Advertising and Public Relations in the College of Communication and Information Sciences who demonstrate a passion for their work and a desire to lead.
The Costello Family Endowed Scholarship in the College of Communication and Information Sciences
Amount: Minimum of $1,000 annually
Availability: One or more each year
Eligibility: Available to students majoring in advertising and public relations and have financial need, although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines.
Vincent J. DeFazio Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Advertising
Amount: Minimum of $1,000 annually

Myatt Harvill Intermark Endowed Memorial Scholarship in the College of Communication
Amount: Approximately $1,000
Availability: Two or more each year
Eligibility: Outstanding full-time student pursuing undergraduate degree in advertising; recipient will have an opportunity to apply for an internship with Intermark Group Inc.
John W. Felton Public Relations Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Minimum of $1,000 annually
Availability: One or two each year
Eligibility: Available to students majoring in public relations (rising junior or senior level) who demonstrate high potential and exceptional promise as a public relations professional; applicant must be a member of UA student chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSSA)
Betty Heard Memorial Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $500 to $1,000 annually; nonrenewable
Eligibility: Advertising major enrolled full-time; must be an active Advertising Federation member and a student from Seventh District Advertising Federation (AL, GA, LA, MS, TN); include a resume
The Tuscaloosa News Jamie Tucker Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Minimum of $2,500
Availability: One each year
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate student with junior standing who intends to pursue a degree in advertising, has a 3.0 or higher GPA, and has a desire for an advertising sales career; priority given to students from the Tuscaloosa area or surrounding counties who demonstrate financial need; the chosen applicant will have first opportunity at a paid summer internship in The Tuscaloosa News advertising department; include a resume
Robert E. Luckie Jr. Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $1,000
Availability: One or more each year
Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to students enrolled in the College of Communication and Information Sciences who are majoring in advertising and who graduated from high schools in Alabama. Qualified applicants should demonstrate high potential for success in college, exceptional promise as advertising professionals, and a strong interest in pursuing careers in advertising.
Marilyn E. Mancini Endowed Scholarship in Advertising

Eligibility: Outstanding full-time student pursuing an undergraduate degree in advertising at the University of Alabama with a 3.5 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale and who demonstrate exceptional promise and dedication as advertising professionals
The Norma Saliba Hanson Endowed Scholarship in the College of Communication and Information Sciences
Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually
Availability: One or more each year
Eligibility: Priority of consideration shall be given to students enrolled in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations who graduated from high schools in the state of Alabama, are pursuing degrees in advertising, and demonstrate exceptional promise as advertising professionals.
Barbara René Shoemake Memorial Graduate Scholarship in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations
Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually
Availability: One or more each year
Eligibility: Used to promote the education of full-time graduate students in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations. The recipient shall not receive a fellowship or an assistantship, and priority is given to students who are not receiving any other financial assistance.
Communication Studies
Alabama Forensics Council Scholarships
Amount: In-state tuition
Availability: Twenty each year

Mary D. Bauer Endowed Scholarship
Amount: $500 annually
Availability: One each year
Eligibility: Priority is given to a full-time student graduating from Enterprise (Alabama) High School and/or Enterprise (Alabama) State Junior College who intends to pursue a degree in communication studies; secondary consideration given to students enrolled in the College of Communication and Information Sciences intending to pursue a degree in communication studies.
Jonathan Birdnow Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually
Availability: One each year
Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to students majoring in communication studies who are members of the Alabama Forensic Council and are actively participating in individual events.
W. T. Goodloe Rutland Endowed Scholarship
Amount: $1,500 annually
Availability: Several annually
Eligibility: Priority to full-time incoming freshman or upper classman student with demonstrated potential to master the arts of debate, discussion and persuasion. Academic and leadership records, test scores, and two letters of recommendation and an application letter that indicate an interest in the study of human communication required. Springford Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $4,000 annually
Availability: Two Per Year (one to an incoming freshman and one to a current student)
Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to full-time undergraduate students majoring in communication studies in the College of Communication and Information Sciences who graduated from a high school in Crenshaw, Pike, Coffee, Geneva, or Covington Counties in Alabama. Second priority of consideration is given to other full-time undergraduate students majoring in communications studies in the College of Communication and Information Sciences who graduated from any high school in Alabama
Frank Thompson Jr. Award for Excellence in Forensics
Amount: Approximately $1,200 annually
Availability: One or more per year
Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to full-time undergraduate and graduate students who are current members of the Alabama Forensic Council; have demonstrated their commitment to forensics through time, dedication, consistency, and continual improvement in individual events and/or debate; and have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Journalism and Creative Media

Ellen East Media Writing Center Mentor Endowment
Amount: Varies
Availability: Several each year
Eligibility: Endowment earnings are used to award stipends to student mentors working in the Media Writing Center in the College of Communication and Information Sciences Money Reserved for Media Writing Center mentors.
Jewel E. Hudgins and Eula Mae Hudgins Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually
Availability: One each year
Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to full-time undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the College of Communication and Information Sciences who are pursuing a degree in journalism with a strong interest in travel writing or studying journalism abroad. Priority of consideration is also given to students who demonstrate financial need, although not necessarily need as defined by federal guidelines, that prohibits participation in academic-related travel programs. Recipients shall possess a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Alabama Broadcasters Association Scholarship
Amount: Varies
Availability: One each year
Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to a junior or senior student enrolled in the College of Communication and Information Sciences with a focus of study within the Department of Journalism and Creative Media. Applications should have graduated from a high school in Alabama and have maintained a 3.0 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

H.M. Ayers Endowed Scholarship in Creative Journalism
Amount: Approximately $1,500 annually
Availability: One each year
Eligibility: Available to journalism students who are specializing in creative journalism; priority to advanced undergraduates and exceptional graduate students; secondary consideration given to qualified students in the department of journalism.
The Buford Boone Memorial Scholarship Fund (Non-Endowed)
Amount: 4 annual full in-state tuition
Availability: 1 time award to rising junior Journalism majors.
Eligibility: Priority to students who demonstrate financial need, not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines. Applicants must demonstrate the high standards in leadership in Journalism.
Louise Cohen Chiz Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $1,500 annually
Availability: Several each year
Eligibility: Priority to students enrolled in the C&IS who are majoring in journalism and possess a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and have financial need, although not necessarily need as defined by federal guidelines.
Benita Doroshea Newton Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $500 per year
Availability: One each year
Eligibility: Full-time journalism student to use to purchase supplies for students whose enrollment would enhance the diversity of the Department of Journalism.
Frances and Caroll Kilpatrick Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Journalism
Amount: $1,000 annually
Availability: One each year
Eligibility: Outstanding future journalist with financial need; freshman through master’s student. The student should be interested in business or political reporting, and strong writers.
John S. and James L. Knight Minority Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually

Eligibility: Outstanding minority student majoring in journalism; full-time freshman through junior.
John Luskin Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $500 annually

Eligibility: Established by Edward Carpenter Hildreth Jr. to promote the study of journalism in the College of Communication and Information Sciences.
Mobile Register Endowed Business Journalism Scholarship/Fellowship
Amount: Approximately $1,500 annually for undergraduate minority students from South Alabama
Availability: Minimum of two undergraduates each year
Eligibility: Outstanding junior or rising junior student planning to pursue a career in business Journalism; declared major in Journalism and approved minor in commerce and business administration. Should be a minority student from the south Alabama area, with an interest in business journalism.
Bailey Thomson Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Journalism
Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually
Availability: One each year
Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to full-time undergraduate students majoring in journalism in the College of Communication & Information Sciences. Each recipient must be majoring in journalism, possess a minimum grade average of “B,” show promise as a writer, and possess the qualities of excellence and citizen involvement exemplified by Dr. Thomson.

Amount: Minimum $2,500 annually

Eligibility: Available to students majoring in print journalism (rising juniors or seniors) with demonstrated leadership and writing skills to those interested in sports writing; must have “B”.
The James B. Boone, Jr. Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually

Eligibility: Priority of consideration shall be given to full-time undergraduate students who are majoring in print journalism within the College of Communication and Information Sciences and who demonstrate financial need, although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines.

Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually

Eligibility: Priority of consideration shall be given to full-time undergraduate students in the College of Communication and Information Sciences who are majoring in journalism and possess a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. First priority of consideration shall be given to students graduating from high schools in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery counties. Second priority of consideration shall be given to students graduating from high schools in the state of Alabama.
J.E. Lisby Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $1,500 annually

Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to full-time undergraduate students majoring in journalism in the College of Communication & Information Sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholarship and writing skills, with preference being given to students interested in sports writing. Recipients must possess a minimum grade average of “B.”
