GirlSpring (www.girlspring.com) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower girls ages 13-18 by giving them access to the resources they need to make better life choices, informed decisions, and ultimately lead better lives and be better contributors to society. GirlSpring’s main program platform is it’s online community for girls (website) www.girlspring.com.

The Social Media Intern will be tasked with increase visitation and engagement to www.girlspring.com, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook. The intern will also perform outreach about GirlSpring to online information outlets including blogs, social networking sites, and the online communications of allied nonprofit organizations.

The Social Media Intern will have the opportunity to learn how to create and implement online marketing and engagement campaigns. This will include learning about new strategies, tactics and tools in the process of working with a fast moving team and highly dedicated team of GirlSpring staff. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with expertise in Instagram, and will be expected to develop creative and innovative ways to grow GirlSpring’s social media audience and the audience for www.girlspring.com.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Grow GirlSpring’s presence on online social networking sites (primarily Instagram, but also some pinterest and FB) by starting conversations online and nurturing online visitors into deeper levels of engagement on www.girlspring.com. An expected outcome will be higher numbers of “likes” or “friends” and ultimately increased traffic on girlspring.com
  • Develop relationships with relevant bloggers, providing them with information about GirlSpring and its offerings for girls.
  • Hours: Part-time/flexible (10-15 hours per week average)
  • Unpaid, but course credit may be available
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be enrolled in a two-year or four-year college
  • Must be experienced with Instagram primarily, but also Pinterest and FB
  • Must have a passion for girls and women’s rights.
  • Must be an outgoing, personable, and articulate networker and self-starter.
  • Must be comfortable working in an environment where creativity is encouraged.
  • Must be web savvy and enjoy keeping up with new content-sharing technologies online.
  • Experience on previous online outreach desirable.
  • Experience using graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator desirable.

UA Press

The internship in the acquisitions department of The University of Alabama Press, the scholarly and academic publishing division of the University of Alabama System, consists of weekly onsite administrative activities. The intern is expected to be available at the Press offices in the McMillan Building on the University of Alabama campus every week throughout the semester, for a minimum of ten hours per week. This is an unpaid internship, but the student should acquire a priceless introduction to the publishing business. If a student continues on for another semester, there is a possibility of payment. The starting date preferred is early September.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research the qualifications and credentials of potential peer reviewers for scholarly manuscripts.
  • Research potential authors for editor to meet with at conferences.
  • Evaluate the potential of two or more manuscripts.
  • Evaluate art for a project.
  • Prepare project description and reader bios for an editorial board packet.
  • Review at least one book contract.
  • Attend at least two weekly staff meetings and one editorial board meeting.
  • Assist in the activities of other departments of the press, including Manuscript Editorial, Copyright and Permissions, and Sales and Marketing.
