Maya Champion joined the University of Alabama faculty in 2013 and serves as an advisor for the Creative Media program. She teaches screenwriting and directing, drawing on extensive professional and academic experience in film and media.
Champion brings more than a decade of experience as a writer, filmmaker, producer and educator to her teaching. Her background bridges creative practice and critical analysis, providing students with a well-rounded understanding of media production and storytelling.
Impact Beyond the University
Before joining the University of Alabama, Champion taught critical studies courses at the University of Southern Mississippi. She earned an M.F.A. in Screenwriting from Columbia University and a B.F.A. in Film Production from New York University, training that informs both her creative work and pedagogical approach.
Through advising and instruction, Champion plays a key role in guiding students through academic pathways in film and media, supporting their creative development and professional preparation.
