About

Dr. Lu’s work bridges information science, natural language processing and interdisciplinary research applications across the sciences and humanities. He serves as Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs and Associate Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies.   

An information scientist by training, Dr. Lu specializes in natural language processing (NLP), text mining, and information retrieval. His expertise spans a wide range of text analytics methods, including rule-based, dictionary-based, machine-learning- and deep-learning-based approaches, as well as recent advances in large language models.  

His research focuses on applying these computational techniques to complex information problems. In collaboration with domain specialists, he leverages NLP and large language models across diverse areas such as materials science, health, education, and the humanities, supporting data-driven inquiry and advancing scientific discovery.  

Impact Beyond the University  

Through interdisciplinary collaborations, Dr. Lu contributes to the practical application of advanced information technologies in research and professional settings. His work helps translate developments in AI and NLP into tools and methods that address real-world challenges across multiple fields.
