The Clarence E. Cason Award in Nonfiction Writing is a prestigious honor that celebrates the intersection of outstanding journalism and the deep-rooted cultural landscape of Alabama. Presented annually by the College of Communications & Information Sciences (C&IS), this award is more than just a recognition of literary achievement; it is a tribute to a legacy that spans generations of writers whose work has defined the literary and journalistic traditions of the South.
Named after Clarence E. Cason, the first chair of The University of Alabama (UA) journalism department, the award reflects the standards Cason set for academic excellence and professional integrity. Cason, a distinguished writer and educator, was committed to producing not only capable journalists but also well-rounded individuals who understood the importance of intellectual and cultural exploration.
This year’s recipient, Lars Anderson, is a New York Times bestselling author of 12 books, a renowned writer for Sports Illustrated and a part of the department of Journalism and Creative Media (JCM) at UA. Anderson’s career has spanned both sports journalism and narrative nonfiction, with his writing often capturing the human side of sports and history. His work has touched on the emotional and personal stories behind major sports events, allowing readers to connect deeply with the subjects he writes about.
Reflecting on the honor of receiving the Cason Award, Anderson expressed deep appreciation for his connection to The University of Alabama. He remarked, “This award is so special to me for one very simple reason: It’s being given to me by The University of Alabama, my professional home for the last 11 years.”
Anderson, who is originally from Nebraska and spent years in New York City, has made Alabama his home, blending his love for storytelling with a deep connection to the South. As a professor in the JCM department, he plays an integral role in shaping the next generation of journalists and writers, sharing his wealth of experience with students. His work, both in the classroom and through his books, reflects his commitment to storytelling that resonates with people and captures the complexity of Southern experience.
The award ceremony took place on Friday, April 11, 2025, at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center in Tuscaloosa. In addition to the awards ceremony, Lars Anderson hosted a book signing. The event was attended by C&IS faculty, staff, colleagues, and two of his journalism students.
Anderson’s work goes beyond the game, offering thoughtful insights into the societal issues that shape the South. The award reflects college’s ongoing commitment to the legacy of Clarence E. Cason, celebrating writers who exemplify intellectual depth, professional excellence, and the power of great writing to foster empathy, understanding, and meaningful connection.
