About  

Dr. Andrew Billings is the Associate Dean for Faculty, Co-Director of the Beyond Sports Initiative, and Ronald Reagan Chair of Broadcasting in the Department of Journalism and Creative Media. His scholarship examines the powerful intersection of sport, mass media, audience consumption and identity, with particular attention to how media narratives shape public understanding of gender, race and diversity in sports.  

One of the most prolific sports media scholars in the world, Dr. Billings has authored 27 books and more than 290 journal articles and book chapters. His research explores how sports media content influences attitudes, reinforces or challenges cultural norms, and reflects broader social dynamics. His work has been translated into five languages and published in leading journals such as Journal of Communication, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Communication & Sport, and Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media.  

Impact Beyond the University  

Dr. Billings’s research extends far beyond academia, informing conversations about representation, equity, and ethics in sports media. His books—including Mascot Nation: The Controversy over Native American Representations in Sports and Media and the Head Game: Mental Health in Sports Media—have won national awards by shaping national and international discussions about identity, inclusion and media responsibility.  

As a recognized expert in sports communication, he serves of Editor-in-Chief of the journal Communication & Sport as well as on numerous editorial boards. His work helps media professionals, scholars, and organizations better understand the cultural influence of sports storytelling.  

A Passion for Teaching  

Dr. Billings brings deep industry and scholarly insight to the education of future sports media professionals. Through consistent mentoring and collaboration, he prepares students to critically analyze sports media, engage thoughtfully with issues of diversity and representation and produce compelling, ethical content across platforms.

His teaching reflects his belief that sports communication is not only entertainment, but a powerful force in shaping culture, identity and public dialogue.
