About

Dr. Ben Pyle specializes in competitive speech, argumentation, and public address, areas that lie at the heart of effective civic engagement. His teaching and coaching focus on helping students develop the skills to think critically, argue ethically and communicate persuasively in diverse contexts.

Through his scholarly work and leadership, Dr. Pyle examines how advocacy and debate shape public discourse, influence decision-making, and foster democratic participation. His work emphasizes that the art of argument is not about winning—it’s about understanding, persuasion and responsible citizenship.

Impact Beyond the University

As Director of the Alabama Forensic Council, Dr. Pyle leads one of the nation’s premier collegiate speech and debate programs. Under his direction, students refine their skills in public speaking, performance, and argumentation, representing the university at regional and national competitions.

His mentorship extends far beyond competition. Through debate and public speaking, Dr. Pyle prepares students to become effective advocates in their professional and civic lives. He teaches them to become individuals who can articulate ideas clearly, respond thoughtfully to opposition and use communication to advance social and ethical goals.

A Passion for Teaching and Advocacy

In the classroom, Dr. Pyle brings the energy and discipline of competitive forensics to his teaching of argumentation, public address, and advocacy. He challenges students to research deeply, think strategically, and speak with purpose.

His teaching philosophy is rooted in empowerment: helping students discover that effective communication can shape change, foster understanding, and strengthen communities. Whether coaching a debate team or leading a seminar, Dr. Pyle exemplifies how communication education builds the confidence and competence needed to lead in an increasingly complex world.
