About
Kyle Clark explores books as both an artistic creation and a window into history. Through his teaching, research, and creative practice, he examines how bookbinding and the close examination of books as physical objects reveal the stories behind the objects themselves while helping to preserve cultural heritage. Additionally, Clark explores the book as a contemporary and lively mode of artistic expression.
His scholarship spans the history of the book, bookbinding and book arts pedagogy, and combines technical analysis with the perspective of a practicing bookbinder and conservation professional. Through close study of physical books, from medieval manuscripts to contemporary artists’ books, Clark investigates material evidence to better understand the materials, techniques, traditions, and cultural contexts that have shaped the written record throughout history.
Impact Beyond the University
Before joining The University of Alabama, Clark spent more than nine years as a book and paper conservator at Emory University and the University of Michigan, where his research informed the preservation of rare and historically significant collections.
Beyond his creative and scholarly work, Clark has served in national leadership roles with the Guild of Book Workers, helping strengthen the book arts community through research, publishing and professional service. His work continues to bridge conservation and public engagement, ensuring that the history and craft of the book remain accessible to future generations.
A Passion for Teaching and Craftmanship
Clark believes the study of books opens doors to countless disciplines, from art and design to history, librarianship, conservation and information science. In the classroom, he encourages students to see book arts as both a creative practice and a way of understanding the broader historical significance of the written word.
He encourages students to pursue opportunities beyond the classroom through exhibitions, professional organizations, and collaborative projects. By connecting students with the broader book arts community, Clark helps them develop the skills to shape the future of the field.
