During the week of September 23, The University of Alabama and the University of Georgia (UGA) will face off in a friendly annual giving competition. The university that receives the most donations will be crowned the winner after the Alabama-Georgia football game on Saturday, September 28.

“This is the first year for Beat Week,” said Brie Campbell, coordinator for college and alumni relations. “The event will be a new, fun and engaging way to get students involved throughout the week with our eyes on the prize of sweeping UGA, as well as helping increase funds to support our students and alumni.”

For the College of Communication & Information Sciences (C&IS), each day of the campaign will be accompanied by a “Spirit Day,” a themed day intended to inspire students to help UA beat UGA. The Spirit Days are:

Monday: We got the beat (2 – 4 P.M. in the HUB); $4 cookies
Tuesday: Beating up a win (8 – 10 A.M. in the HUB); $2 iced coffees and $2 muffins
Wednesday: Welcome to the dog pound (12 – 2 P.M. in front of Reese Phifer); $2 pet bandanas and $2 snacks
Thursday: Sweep a win (10 A.M. – 12 P.M. in the HUB); $2 dirt cups
Friday: Spirit Day (11 A.M. – 1 P.M. in front of Reese Phifer); $2 stickers and $4 buttons

All donations to C&IS will go to the Capstone Communication Society (CCS) annual fund. CCS is C&IS’s annual fund and plays an impactful role in enhancing the experience of our students through opportunities such as student scholarships, experiential learning trips and workshops, and student work/internship experiences.

UGA has championed Beat Week for over 4 years, competing against Auburn for the first 3 years. Last year, they beat the University of Florida by 800 donations, giving them a 4-year win streak. Overall, they raised over 1.5 million dollars for scholarships, research and academic programming.

Campbell hopes to both break that streak and start a new event at UA. She said, “I’m excited for Beat Week and to try something new in a friendly competition. Let’s start a new, winning tradition!”
