On November 21-24, 57 faculty and doctoral students attended the 110th Annual National Communication Association (NCA) Conference in New Orleans, LA. This year’s theme, “Communication for Greater Regard,” featured over 1,000 presentations and panels highlighting the latest trends, innovations and best practices in the communication fields.

Highlights of the conference included an opening session, titled Greater Regard for Acadmic Freedom, led by various faculty and communicators; the Caroll C. Arnold Distinguished Lecture, led by Carolyn Calloway-Thomas, Ph.D., from Indiana University; and a presidential address from Marnel Niles Goins, PhD., from American University.

Beyond presentations, assistant professor Noor Ghazal Aswad, Ph.D., was presented with the Karl R. Wallace Memorial Award she received in September.

[The Karl R. Wallace Award] signifies something far greater than just a career milestone – the discipline’s recognition of rhetoric as not just a means of critique, but as a vital tool for building transnational solidarity, for fostering decoloniality, and for advancing justice.

I am deeply grateful to be part of that change and hope more spaces open for scholars from all walks of life who have so much to contribute to the field, and more importantly, our broader culture.

Noor Ghazal Aswad, Ph.D.
