Ten alumni from The College of Communication and Information Science were among the Centennial Graduate Scholars honored as part of the University of Alabama’s Graduate School’s 100-year celebration. Ramsey Archibald, Danilo Madayag Baylen, Terry Daugherty, Makiba J. Foster, Jackson Hataway, Amy H. Jones, Mary Lieb, Katherine M. Ruffin, Louise Oliver and Steven Yates were recognized for their professional accomplishments that have brought distinction to the university and their academic programs.
“As leaders in a range of communication, media, and information organizations, the C&IS alumni named as Centennial Scholars reflect the high standards of excellence, thoughtful action, and meaningful impact that the UA Graduate School has emphasized throughout it’s 100 year history,” said C&IS dean, Brian Butler.
Some of the honored alumni shared what made C&IS pivotal to their career, how it shaped their path and how it felt to receive this honor.
“I am honored to be one of the Graduate School’s Centennial Scholars at The University of Alabama. My LIS degree made me a better researcher and a reflective scholar-teacher, given the intersectionality of children’s literature, Asian cultures and visual literacy,” said 2013 SLIS Graduate Dr. Danilo Madayag Baylen. “I look forward to excelling more and will continue highlighting UA’s LIS program through future professional accomplishments, especially in international settings.”
Dr. Baylen, a 2023 Fulbright U.S. Scholar to the Philippines, is currently a tenured professor of Instructional Technology, Media and Design in the Department of Educational Technology and Foundations at the University of West Georgia College of Education.
Terry Daughterty, Ph.D., has written more than 80 research publications throughout his career and is recognized as a leading expert on digital marketing and consumer psychology. He earned his master’s in advertising & public relations in 1999 from UA and then received his doctorate at Michigan State University. Currently, Dr. Daughtery is the Dean of Indiana State University Scott College of Business.
“I am honored to receive this recognition as I greatly value my graduate education from the Advertising & Public Relations department in the College of Communication & Information Sciences,” said Dr. Daughtery. “My time at The University of Alabama was truly a formative period for my development, and I feel tremendous gratitude for the wonderful professors that invested in me, as well as the lifelong friendships forged while at the Capstone. Throughout my career, I have endeavored to achieve excellence in research, teaching and service while seeking to make an impact as a scholar, which makes receiving this truly special.”
