President Peter J. Mohler Visits C&IS

As summer gives way to fall, the energy of a new academic year fills the campus at The University of Alabama. This August not only marked the return of students for the 2025 fall semester but also ushered in a historic moment for the institution, the arrival of its 30th president, Peter J. Mohler, M.D. To begin his tenure, Mohler embarked on a series of visits across campus, engaging with students, faculty and staff to better understand the Capstone’s traditions, culture and vision for the future. On Wednesday, Aug. 13, the College of Communication and Information Sciences (C&IS) welcomed him for a special visit that highlighted both the college’s rich legacy and its bold trajectory forward.

Mohler brings with him more than two decades of distinguished leadership in higher education and research. Before joining UA, he served at The Ohio State University as executive vice president for research, innovation and knowledge, as well as chief scientific officer of the Wexner Medical Center. In 2023, he was called upon to serve as acting president of Ohio State, where he led during a pivotal time with a steady hand and a commitment to collaboration. His professional journey has been defined not only by his extensive research portfolio and publications in respected scientific journals, but also by his student-centered approach and belief in the transformative power of higher education.

C&IS offered Mohler an immersive look into the innovative work happening within its classrooms, labs and learning hubs. He met directly with faculty and staff who are shaping the next generation of communication professionals, and with students who are building their skills in areas such as journalism, advertising, public relations, creative media and information sciences. From television studios and media production labs to collaborative research centers and community engagement initiatives, the college demonstrated its unique strength in blending theory with practice. These experiences not only prepare students for dynamic careers but also equip them with the ability to lead conversations, solve problems and influence change on a global scale.

As Mohler toured the facilities, he gained a firsthand appreciation for how C&IS creates opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. Faculty members shared examples of research on media ethics, digital storytelling and the evolving role of technology in communication. Students highlighted their involvement in hands-on projects, internships and organizations that allow them to apply what they learn in meaningful, real-world contexts. The college’s culture of collaboration and innovation resonated strongly with Mohler’s own vision for a university that thrives through interdisciplinary partnerships and a commitment to excellence.

For C&IS the president’s visit was more than just an introduction. It was a moment to showcase the college’s vibrant spirit, its resources and its dedication to student success. The visit also underscored the role communication and information play in shaping communities, industries and societies, an area where C&IS continues to lead with confidence and creativity.

As the university embraces this new chapter under Mohler’s leadership, the relationship between the president’s office and C&IS promises to strengthen the college’s impact and extend its reach. His visit served as a reminder that communication lies at the heart of progress, and that the work of the college will continue to play a vital role in advancing the university’s mission. With a proud tradition and an eye toward the future, C&IS stands ready to build upon its legacy of excellence while shaping the next generation of communicators, innovators and leaders.
