Rece Davis Honored by the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame

Communication & Information Sciences alumnus and one of sports journalism’s most recognizable voices, Rece Davis, was honored as the 2026 Distinguished American Sportsman by the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. The recognition was presented during the Hall of Fame’s 58th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony on May 9, 2026. Davis now joins a distinguished list of honorees connected to The University of Alabama, including painter Daniel Moore, the 2019 Distinguished American Sportsman recipient, and former Alabama football coach Nick Saban, a 2013 Hall of Fame inductee.

The Distinguished American Sportsman was created in 1986 to honor those who have made lasting contributions in sports in Alabama.

After attending high school in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Davis graduated from The University of Alabama in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast news and public affairs from C&IS. During his time at UA, he started his broadcasting career as a general assignment reporter at WCFT-TV in Tuscaloosa.

He spent the early 1990s working as a sports anchor and reporter in Georgia and Michigan before moving to Bristol, Connecticut, and beginning what has become a more than 30-year career with ESPN. His time with the network has included a plethora of shows and events ranging from covering horse racing during Triple Crown season to his well-known stints doing commentary for college basketball and football. In 2015, Davis began hosting College GameDay, ESPN’s longstanding pregame football road show. GameDay remains one of ESPN’s signature programs, consistently attracting millions of viewers throughout the college football season.

Davis has maintained ties to his alma mater as he has been recognized by C&IS several times for his work over the years. He was named one of the Outstanding Alumni in 2001 during the College’s annual Honors Day. In 2018, he joined the College’s Hall of Fame along with Jennings F. Bryant, Jr., Fred D. Gray and Houston and Voncile Pearce.

As Davis receives one of Alabama’s highest sports honors, his career remains a point of pride for C&IS and a testament to the impact alumni continue to make on the national stage.
