The Division of Student Life consists of 24 non-academic areas of campus life. Some of these departments include Dean of Students, University Recreation, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Center for Service and Leadership, and Student Health Center and Pharmacy. The External Relations department works with these areas to produce marketing and communication pieces, while utilizing the UA brand standards. External Relations also works together to produce designs for the division as a whole through social media, Capstone magazine, and other events on campus.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Current, full-time junior or senior UA student with major or minor in communications and/or graphic design • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) • Knowledge of social media channels • Creative thinker • Excellent communication skills • Organized, dependable, and detail oriented • Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks within identified time frames

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Photography experience • Video experience • Accessibility knowledge

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in creating promotional material (digital and print) • Developing social media images • Proof and edit materials • Maintain University branding standards

GirlSpring (www.girlspring.com) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower girls ages 13-18, by giving them access to the resources they need to make better life choices, informed decisions, and ultimately lead better lives. GirlSpring is seeking separate social media and blogger interns, for fall semester and for spring semester.

The Social Media Intern will work directly with the website team (Atlas Digital Marketing) to increase visitation and engagement to www.girlspring.com, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook (possibly). The intern will also perform outreach about GirlSpring to online information outlets including blogs, social networking sites, and the online communications of allied nonprofit organizations.

Bloggers will be featured on their website and on social media, will play an integral role in the web team, and in the strategic development of www.girlspring.com. This is a flexible position, and most work can be done remotely. The internship will, however, include weekly in person meetings with the web team at the GirlSpring office in Birmingham, AL.

The internship in the acquisitions department of The University of Alabama Press, the scholarly and academic publishing division of the University of Alabama System, consists of weekly onsite administrative activities. The intern is expected to be available at the Press offices in the McMillan Building on the University of Alabama campus every week throughout the semester, for a minimum of ten hours per week. This is an unpaid internship, but the student should acquire a priceless introduction to the publishing business.

Duties and responsibilities are according to priorities and to expose the intern to the workings of the department, and over the course of a semester the intern is expected to be responsible for some of the following activities:

  • Research the qualifications and credentials of potential peer reviewers for scholarly manuscripts.
  • Research potential authors for editor to meet with at conferences.
  • Evaluate the potential of two or more manuscripts.
  • Evaluate art for a project.
  • Prepare project description and reader bios for an editorial board packet.
  • Review at least one book contract.
  • Attend at least two weekly staff meetings and one editorial board meeting.

If the acquisitions intern is so inclined and the opportunities are available, the intern may assist in the activities of other departments of the press, including Manuscript Editorial, Copyright and Permissions, and Sales and Marketing.

The College of Human Environmental Sciences is seeking an intern to assist with video and photography. This will include helping out on shoots, college events and post-production items, including: editing work, video clean-up and archival clean-up. This unpaid internship will begin in September 2017. The ideal candidate for this position is a freshman, sophomore, or junior level student. Upon successful completion of internship, intern may be hired as paid student employee. Regular working hours (between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.) with some after hours video shoots.

Preferred skills include:

  • Experience with Adobe Premiere, Audition, After Effects and Photoshop.
  • Experience with video cameras, sound, lighting, post-production, animation, and titles and graphics.
  • Experience with photography.

The internship involves Digital Asset Management of clips and back catalog, captioning, and other standard editing duties. It is a working television show, so superb organizational skills, and the ability to pay attention to detail are must have qualities for this position.
There may be additional opportunities for small editing and on set opportunities.
The ideal candidates will have availability for either of two daily shifts (9am-1pm, 1pm-5pm) , Monday through Thursday. They would like applicants to be able to work 2 shifts per week.

Skills needed:

  • Previous knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud software (specifically Adobe Bridge and Premiere Pro) is a plus.

Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa, a local affiliate of a world-wide, non-profit organization, transforms lives through home ownership and home repair for low-income families. HFHT seeks an intern who can help the organization convey its dynamic mission to our community through public relations and advertising, especially as it relates to social media publicity for the non-profit’s construction work, and for the ReStore (the organization’s building materials and furniture thrift store). Other duties may include developing press releases, e-mail communications, newsletters, fundraising letters, newspaper advertisements, and any other form of communication to further the Habitat mission. The internship may be either a single semester or an academic year, but a full academic year is preferred.
